“To the table! Dinner is ready”. The moment we sit down at the table, it divides the human body into two halves. The upper half is visible to everyone present, while the lower half remains hidden from view. Above, communication unfolds through facial expressions, speech, actions and posture, accompanied by eating and drinking, while below, a different conversation begins. Beneath the tabletop, we encounter restless legs, fingers drumming nervously and small gestures – perhaps even an occasional gentle kick – which often reveals more than words ever could. One might sense the wagging of a dog’s tail or stumble upon the empty shells of past conversations lying like crumbs between the chair legs. Whatever we find there, it is another space and another universe within the same reality.

The title Under the Table Is Above represents a poetic and metaphorical exploration of what lies beneath the visible surface. This hidden realm is a counterpart to the visible world, resembling a secret landscape where the private and the public overlap, offering a fresh perspective on the ordinary. When the hidden is observed, it reveals itself and becomes open to transformation.

The collaborative work of the artist duo Monika Deimling and BBB Johannes Deimling is an ongoing dialogue about the subtle moments of existence. From these daily observations emerge works that translate moments that are difficult to express into visible forms. With a blend of serious humor, subtle absurdity and an attentive awareness of the small and inconspicuous, the Dresden-based artist couple craft a world where the ordinary reveals its inherent beauty and uniqueness.

This exhibition showcases a multi-layered selection of installations, photographs, objects, videos and drawings. Like a collage, these diverse perspectives merge to form a constantly shifting image.

We invite the audience to join us in taking a curious look under the table. What might we discover when we take a closer look at what has been forgotten, lost or suppressed?

ShowCase VI  | NOVEMBER 2025 (Opening 8 november 13:30)
MICHAN PETERS | Take It, Monkey (2025)
Recycled fabric + Ducks (2024) Mixed media, epoxy, acrystal

With this work, Michan Peters investigates the complexities of trauma – or in other words, unhealed emotional pain. This work looks at the individual as well as society. Trauma develops (whatever the reason) when emotions aren’t felt after an event. It may seem simple to feel our emotions, but it is very hard. Especially after an extremely painful or disturbing event, either big or small. When we don’t want to, or are unable to feel, our bodies have numerous ways to adapt. Often subconsciously, to cope and keep living. And although nothing might seem off for a while, unless it’s felt, the coping eventually turns against us.

Whether it becomes an addiction to drugs, work, physical pain, or an inability to connect, at one point one might find themselves in a predicament. Our bodies and minds are always on sharp; we become exhausted. Sick. Just like the monkey, we might feel like it is the only way to keep ourselves, our thoughts, or the people around us save. We might not like it, but we cannot stop because of whatever is holding us in its grip. We Have-To-Take-It.

From the outside looking in, it might seem crazy. Why would someone choose to act like this? Clearly, it’s not only dangerous to themselves, but to all those involved! If we would even notice that the individual is not okay. With this work, the artist wonders… How did he get here? What are the signs? What does Monkey need? How can he help himself, and how can we help him? Or in other words, what does he, or do we, must take, how to take it, and what is there to give?

20 september | “Thinking about a stage | POPOP x Merleyn |
Broken Toaster records | Carmel’s Karaoke Paradise | Danielle Brans
Start: 21:30
Locatie: Merleyn Hertogstraat 13, Nijmegen

Haar werk onderzoekt fysieke grenservaringen: “I investigate feelings by challenging my body to a point that it is no longer comfortable.”
Een avond vol verrassing, ontregeling en directe betrokkenheid – waarin je zomaar zelf onderdeel wordt van het werk.
Performance wordt podium, publiek wordt speler.
