MICHAN PETERS | Take It, Monkey (2025)
Recycled fabric + Ducks (2024) Mixed media, epoxy, acrystal

With this work, Michan Peters investigates the complexities of trauma – or in other words, unhealed emotional pain. This work looks at the individual as well as society. Trauma develops (whatever the reason) when emotions aren’t felt after an event. It may seem simple to feel our emotions, but it is very hard. Especially after an extremely painful or disturbing event, either big or small. When we don’t want to, or are unable to feel, our bodies have numerous ways to adapt. Often subconsciously, to cope and keep living. And although nothing might seem off for a while, unless it’s felt, the coping eventually turns against us.

Whether it becomes an addiction to drugs, work, physical pain, or an inability to connect, at one point one might find themselves in a predicament. Our bodies and minds are always on sharp; we become exhausted. Sick. Just like the monkey, we might feel like it is the only way to keep ourselves, our thoughts, or the people around us save. We might not like it, but we cannot stop because of whatever is holding us in its grip. We Have-To-Take-It.

From the outside looking in, it might seem crazy. Why would someone choose to act like this? Clearly, it’s not only dangerous to themselves, but to all those involved! If we would even notice that the individual is not okay. With this work, the artist wonders… How did he get here? What are the signs? What does Monkey need? How can he help himself, and how can we help him? Or in other words, what does he, or do we, must take, how to take it, and what is there to give?
